E-On Recalls Thermostats

EKPC has learned the thermostats used in the SimpleSaver program may have a potential problem that may lead to overheating, according to a press release issued by EKPC, Tuesday.

While EKPC currently has no independent evidence the product creates a risk, out of an abundance of caution the co-op decided to remove the thermostats and replace them, officials said.

Customers who participate in the program can arrange to have their thermostats replaced at no cost by calling 800-305-5493. Technicians from GoodCents, who work on behalf of EKPC and its member cooperatives will do the work. However, if customers prefer, they can contact the heating and air conditioning company of their choice and be reimbursed for the work. Customers who choose this option may bring or mail their SimpleSaver thermostat and paid invoice to their local co-op’s office, and the co-op will process a reimbursement.

“We don’t know that there is an issue with the thermostats, but safety is always a paramount emphasis in our business,” said President and CEO Tony Campbell. “We believe that taking this step is the prudent thing to do.”

Kentucky Utilities and Louisville Gas and Electric also sent out press releases Tuesday saying they are voluntarily replacing some programmable thermostats installed as part of their Demand Conservation program due to a potential safety concern.

The utilities say about 12,500 customers have the thermostats in their homes or businesses as part of the program.
